Abstraction and Beauty - Julia Allen
I'm still thinking about Kandinsky's art and the discussion from last class. It's difficult to grasp fully why the concept of abstraction or rather the concept of interpreting abstract art is uncomfortable and difficult for me. I usually really enjoy interpreting art in the forms of music, poetry, literature, film, etc. However, with visual art I think I more so just enjoy perceiving it as opposed to interpreting. This is especially true with abstract art because it is so formless and open that I don't usually see a storyline right off the bat. It's simpler for me to just enjoy the shapes and colors, admiring the art because I struggle to emotionally connect to it. Letting Kandinsky's art sink in, when I reflect on it now I can tell a story, but it took me a few days to fully grasp how I feel. I still wonder what he was thinking when he created his more abstract pieces, like the individual story behind each piece and the emotions that he was aiming to evoke.
