A discussion on Doom Jack Arians
In 1993, a revolutionary game called DOOM was published where the player adventures as 'Doomguy', a marine in an apocalyptic future who defends earth from demons and the forces of Hell. In 2020, Bethesda Softworks published a completely reworked installment of DOOM called DOOM: Eternal, which is the pinnacle of demon-slaying and violent video games in general. The gameplay is non-stop, in-your-face, heart-pumping action with elements of humor, fantastical lore, and thought-provoking questions of morality.
The enjoyment one feels when playing violent role-playing games such as DOOM is not the enjoyment of inflicting harm transferred into a virtual environment. In a way, it is both an expression of greater meanings we find within ourselves like morality, as well as a way of having experience completely outside the reality we reside in. It is an experience free of morality, free of reason, free of everything we know sensually, something deeper.
